Cookie Policy

Last updated: October 2026

Nearby uses cookies and similar technologies to provide, protect, and improve our platform. This policy explains what cookies are, how we use them, and how you can manage your preferences.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help the site remember your actions and preferences over time. Some cookies are essential for the site to work, while others help us improve your experience.

Types of cookies we use

Essential cookies

Required

These cookies are necessary for the platform to function. They enable core features like secure login, session management, and payment processing. You cannot opt out of essential cookies.

Examples: Session tokens, CSRF protection, Stripe payment cookies, Supabase authentication, and nearby_cookie_consent (stored in your browser to remember your choices for Analytics and Maps)

Analytics cookies (Google Analytics 4)

Optional

Off unless you allow Analytics on our cookie banner ("Accept all", or "Choose") - until then Google Analytics is not loaded at all. If you accept, Google Analytics 4, provided by Google Ireland Limited, helps us understand how Nearby is used: which pages are visited and a few key actions (sign-ups, new listings, booking requests and payments, and the category you browse). Before anything is sent we remove query strings and replace IDs in web addresses with a placeholder. We never send your name, email address, user ID, listing titles or anything you type, and Google's advertising features are switched off.

Examples: _ga (tells visitors apart, expires after 13 months) and _ga_FTE30PMWPL (keeps the session state, expires after 13 months). Google Analytics keeps the event data for up to 14 months.

Maps (Google Maps)

Optional

Off until you choose it. Our search page can show listings on a map provided by Google Maps (Google Ireland Limited). Google Maps is not loaded until you allow Maps on our cookie banner ("Accept all", or "Choose") or press "Show map" on the map itself: until then nothing is requested from Google Maps. We remember that choice in your browser, so after that the map loads straight away, also on later visits. When the map loads, Google receives your IP address and the address of the page, under Google's own privacy policy. You can turn Maps off at any time in "Cookie settings".

Examples: The map view on the search page. Your Maps choice is kept in nearby_cookie_consent (under Essential cookies above).

Browser storage for features you use

Required

We do not use preference cookies. A few features keep a small note in your browser's own storage instead. These notes are not cookies and stay on your device: we do not read them from our servers, except three, below: the listing view ID, which only our view counter receives, the Lend mode ID, which our servers receive only to limit how often your device asks for suggestions, and a claim link, which the page sends to us when you open or claim the listing it is for, so we can check it.

Examples: Your unfinished listing while you create it, that we refreshed the page once after an update, how far down each page you had scrolled, so Back returns you to the same spot, which reply we last showed to a search we do not show results for, so a repeat gets a different one, and a random ID so a listing you look at twice is counted as one view, of which we keep only a scrambled version for 30 days (all cleared when you close the tab); the photos you add to an unfinished listing, so they are still there if the page refreshes (deleted when you publish it or sign out, or once they have not changed for 7 days); the page you were on when you signed up or chose Google, so we can bring you back to it (cleared once used, and ignored after 1 hour); the booking you were making when you went to verify your ID, so we can bring you back to it with your dates (cleared once used, and ignored after 24 hours); that you dismissed the smart replies tip in Messages (kept until you clear your browser data); for Lend mode on our home search, a random ID that limits how often your device can ask for suggestions (kept until you clear your browser data, and never sent to the AI provider), the things you ticked before signing up, so we can set them up as drafts once you have (cleared once used, and ignored after 1 hour), and which drafts it set up, so we can count how many get published (no ID leaves your device for that); the link to claim a listing someone set up for you, so it still works after you log in or sign up, and sent to us only when you open or claim that listing (deleted when you claim it; once it is 14 days old, deleted the next time you open Nearby, and the link itself stops working after 14 days)

Marketing cookies

Optional

We do not use marketing or advertising cookies. If that ever changes, we will ask for your consent first.

Examples: None

Third-party cookies

We use trusted third-party services that may set their own cookies. These providers have their own privacy policies governing the use of cookies.

Managing cookies

You can manage your cookie preferences in several ways:

  • Use the cookie banner when you first visit Nearby: "Accept all" and "Reject all" are each one click, and "Choose" lets you set Analytics and Maps one by one
  • Change your mind at any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page, or the button below
  • Configure your browser to block or delete cookies
  • Use browser extensions that manage cookie consent

If you withdraw consent, we switch off and remove Google Analytics straight away in every Nearby tab you have open, delete the _ga cookies from your browser, and do not load Google Analytics on later visits. Google Analytics only ever runs in a separate, hidden part of the page that we add when you accept; the rest of our pages are set up to block loading anything from Google Analytics. This covers what our pages do on their own: if you follow a link to a Google website yourself, such as Google's privacy policy in the table above, that page is run by Google under its own policy.

If you turn Maps off, we remove the map and show the "Show map" placeholder in its place, and Google Maps is not loaded on your later visits until you allow it again.

We also use Vercel Web Analytics, which is cookieless and does not identify you.

Please note that blocking essential cookies may prevent certain features from working correctly.
